FAQ | Techniseal Wood Care Products
Inexpensive and highly versatile, treated wood remains year after year, one of the most common choices for the construction of patios, pool decks, fences, pergolas, and other outdoor structures.
In addition to its obvious aesthetical upsides, treated wood is a low-maintenance material that offers good resistance to the straining conditions of the Canadian weather.
Treated wood is made from spruce, fir, or pine lumber subjected to a pressure treatment that improves the material's resistance to mold and mildew and facilitates its preservation. However, as with most other outdoor building materials, sealing treated wood is the only way to preserve its great looks and sound condition.
Available at numerous hardware stores throughout Canada, our Wood Stain & Sealer is the perfect solution to protect outdoor wooden structures while enhancing their appearance.
To learn more about our high-grade wood protector, consult its technical data sheet online or reach out to your local hardware professional.

I want to apply Techniseal's Wood Stain and Sealer to a balcony previously treated with another manufacturer's protector. Is it necessary to completely strip the surface?
Yes.
Before applying Techniseal's Wood Stain and Sealer or any other protective product or coating, it is imperative to thoroughly strip and sand the surface to remove all traces of paint, varnish, or other coatings.
We strongly recommend asking your hardware store specialist for advice on choosing the most suitable stripper and always following the manufacturer's instructions when applying any stripping product.
I completely stripped and sanded my wooden deck. Is it still necessary to clean it before applying a new coating?
Yes, we strongly recommend it.
Properly cleaning the wooden surface after stripping and sanding it will ensure aesthetic, uniform, and long-lasting results.
For example, using Techniseal Wood Cleaner will :
- Restore the wood's original appearance by removing any grayish or blackish tint.
- Eliminate all traces of moss and mildew.
- Remove embedded dirt and grease (e.g. BBQ grease).
- Ensure better penetration of the new coating by opening up the wood's pores.
In what range of colours is Techniseal's Wood Stain & Sealer available?
Our wood protective coating is offered in a selection of 8 trendy colours.

However, store inventories may vary; we strongly recommend that you contact your local hardware stores to find out which colours they have in stock.
After applying the initial coating of Techniseal's Wood Stain and Sealer, I notice that some parts appear lighter than others. Should I add a second coating?
A second coat should not be necessary as this product was developed for single-coat applications.
It is essential to ensure the surface is fully saturated with the product while applying the initial coating.
If necessary, a second coat can be added a few minutes after the first (wet-on-wet).
Is it possible to paint a wooden gallery following the application of Techniseal's tinted protector?
No.
As previously mentioned, no coating product should be applied to wooden structures without thoroughly stripping and sanding them beforehand. This goes for varnishes, paints, or any other type of coating.
What added benefits does linseed oil bring to Techniseal's Wood Stain and Sealer?
Our Wood Stain and Sealer is a premium quality product offering numerous advantages over less expensive protectors.
This product's water-based formula is enhanced with linseed oil and contains nanocrystalline pigments. In addition to ensuring the long-lasting protection of patios, decks, fences, and other wooden structures, our Stain & Sealer protector guarantees a richer and crispier aesthetical finish.
This product also provides superior resistance to Canada's harsh weather conditions. Our Stain & Sealer will not chip, crack, or fade, even under prolonged exposition to rain, snow, UV rays, and freeze/thaw periods.
Easy to apply, this protector does not release unpleasant fumes and is environmentally friendly.
How long should I wait before resuming circulation on a surface recently treated with Techniseal's Wood Stain & Sealer?
To guarantee optimal results, we recommend waiting at least 24 hours before resuming pedestrian or light vehicular circulation on a newly treated structure.
We recommend blocking all access to the installation before sealing it to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
At what temperature should Techniseal’s Wood Stain and Sealer be applied?
We recommend applying this product when temperatures are between 15℃ and 25℃.
Additionally, before applying this product, you should ensure the surface is dry and warm to the touch.
Finally, temperatures should not drop below 10℃ in the hours leading to and following the application.
A few hours following the application, unexpected showers begin raining down; what should I do?
It is IMPERATIVE to ensure that no showers or rainfalls are expected in the 24 hours following our Wood Stain and Sealer application.
Weather forecast is an inexact science; it is possible that unexpected rainfall occurs within hours of applying the product. While the situation is far from ideal, this does not mean your hard work was completely wasted.
Oftentimes, treated surfaces will be dry to the touch within 2 hours of application. Depending on the precipitation intensity, the protective coating may be only slightly affected by the weather.
Avoid walking on the installation for at least 24 hours to be on the safe side.
Come springtime, is it recommended to add touch-ups to a surface treated with Techniseal's wood protector?
No, our Stain and Sealant does not require annual touch-ups.
No coating product should be added to the wood structure unless the initial application has reached the end of its useful life.
To check the water-repellency condition of a structure, pour a few drops of water onto its surface.
- If the water is absorbed, a new coating is required.
- No new coating should be applied if the water beads on the surface.
Why can't I apply this product to structures made from cedar wood?
Cedar lumber secretes tannins, natural substances shielding wood from contaminants.
Because these tannins interfere with the proper penetration of Techniseal's Stain & Sealer (or any other protective coating), we cannot guarantee the quality and longevity of applications carried out on cedar structures.
Which products do you recommend for the periodic maintenance of surfaces treated with Techniseal's Wood Stain and Sealer?
Our product requires minimal maintenance.
When applied correctly, it dramatically reduces the risk of staining contaminant penetration.
A simple wash with our Wood Cleaner is more than sufficient to freshen up treated surfaces.
